When did you join start working for Aesthetic & Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Clinic?

I’ve been working with A&RPS since September 2008. Eddie inherited me together with the rooms and surgical equipment when he started his practice alongside Dr Peter Catt.
I was first employed as a full-time plastic surgery RN in April 1996 and have continued in plastic surgery since then – working in recovery, theatre, wound care, breast care and even reception. I love working in plastics because there is plenty of variety, our patients are lovely and the work is rewarding.

What’s your day-to-day role here?

In my role as an RN at A&RPS my main responsibility is nursing care, which involves giving reassurance and information to patients together with their post-op care. I also manage the day to day running of our minor-operating theatre.

What skills do you need for that role?

Good listening and observation skills, a warm heart and a steady hand. Luckily, I have been an RN for over 35 years and have worked in a variety of roles from children’s intensive care to health promotion at QUT.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

When I see a patient who may have been fearful prior to their procedure, leave our rooms relaxed and confident because of our expert care.

And the most challenging?

Every patient is unique and it’s important to make each individual feel comfortable and confident in our care. Sometimes a diagnosis or procedure may seem overwhelming and finding just the right words to reassure can be a real challenge.

What would you be doing if you hadn’t decided to follow this career path?

I think I would still be working at QUT. I had commenced post- graduate studies in health promotion with a view to continuing in adolescent health.

How do you relax when you’re not at work?

I’m always busy with my large family but I love to walk, read and go to the beach. Chocolate is also a priority!
